Scavengers
|
These
animals are scavengers. Both of these scavengers are active at night.
They will live almost anywhere with trees and bushes to hide from predators
or to hide from prey. The opossum is lower because a few animals like
the coyote will eat opossum. The coyote has no predators to my
knowledge. If there weren't any scavengers, dead carcasses would pile up.

Name:
|
Coyote |
Description: |
The coyote is active at night. It will run from a
person with a lantern. |
Habitat: |
Coyotes can be found
in a variety of habitats including fields, plains and bushy
areas.
|
Diet: |
The coyote does most
of its hunting alone and at night. It is carnivorous. Most of
its diet is made up of mammals, but it also will eat birds and
snakes. It prefers to eat fresh kill, but it will eat
carrion. In the fall and winter, the coyote often eats fruits,
vegetables and berries. When hunting small prey like mice,
the coyote will stand still with its legs stiff and then pounce
on its prey. When hunting larger prey like deer, coyotes
hunt in packs. One or more coyote will chase the deer
while the others wait, then the next pick up the chase.
Working in teams like this the coyote can tire the deer out,
making it easier to kill. |

Name:
|
Opossum |
Description: |
It is active at night. |
Habitat: |
The opossum lives in
a wide-variety of habitats including deciduous forests, open
woods, and farmland. It tends to prefer wet areas like marshes,
swamps, and streams. |
Diet: |
The opossum is
nocturnal and uses its keen sense of smell to locate food. It is
omnivorous and eats just about anything, including lots of
different plants and animals like fruits, insects, and other
small animals. Sometimes it eats garbage and carrion.
Carrion is dead animals. Because so much carrion is road kill,
opossums are often killed by cars while looking for food on
roadways. |
