Carnivores

These three animals are carnivores, this means they eat only meat. These animals are secondary consumers because they are animals that eat other animals.

Name:

Florida Panther
Description:   It has short light brown fur and a white muzzle, chest and stomach.  It has a long tail with a slight crook in it, that, and a whorl of hair on its back are characteristics that make it different from the mountain lion. Males are between seven and eight feet long and weigh between 100 and 160 pounds.     Females are about six feet long and weigh between 60 and 100 pounds. 
Habitat: The Florida panther lives in both wetlands and dry lands.  It lives in cypress forests, thicket swamps and freshwater marshes.  Its dry habitat includes hardwood hammocks, saw palmetto woodlands and pine flat woods.  It prefers areas with lots of cover.
Diet:

Its favorite prey is the white-tailed deer. It also eats raccoons, armadillos, birds, and other small prey. Depending on the size of the kill, it may feed on it for three or four days.


Name:

American Badger
Description: Flat body, short legs, triangular face with a long, pointed, and tipped up nose. It has long brown or black fur with white stripes on its cheeks and one stripe running from its nose to its back. It has small ears on  the side of its head with long and sharp front claws.
Habitat: Its habitat is on prairies, near farmlands and on the edge of woods.
Diet: It eats small burrowing mammals like ground squirrel, rats, gophers, and mice make up most of the badger's diet. It also eats snakes, birds and reptiles.

Canadian Lynx
Description: Canadian lynx have very thick light brown or gray fur often with light black spots. It has large ears with long black tufts at the ends. Its tail is short with a black tip at the end. It has a pointed beard-like ruff and long legs with big paws.
Habitat: Lynx live deep in coniferous forests near rocky areas, bogs and swamps
Diet: About 75% of the lynx's diet is made up of the snowshoe hare.  They also eat birds, meadow voles, carrion, and sometimes larger animals like deer and caribou.
